University of Glamorgan

Graduate Success for Glamorgan Students

There are many reasons to go to university – studying a subject that fascinates you, becoming independent, making new friends and more. But there’s one thing that’s vitally important, whatever subject you’re studying: what will you do when you graduate? A degree is an investment in your future, and we want that investment to pay off. That’s why we make sure that all of our courses are designed with employability in mind.

As well as specialist knowledge in your chosen field, we’ll also give you the practical skills to apply that knowledge to the workplace. So whatever you choose to study, from social work to surveying, accounting to art, law to logistics, you’ll not only graduate with a degree but also the real-life practical skills that you’ll need to get ahead.

Work placements

At Glamorgan, we think work experience is an essential part of your degree, so there are lots of opportunities to experience the world of work. Many of our degrees can be studied as 'sandwich’ courses, where you’ll spend up to a year in paid work experience that counts towards your qualification. We can also help you to find holiday or industrial placements, opportunities overseas or voluntary work in an area that interests you. Our careers service and its GO Wales scheme can help you find a placement to match your interests and aspirations.

Industry links

We think it’s essential to keep up with the ever-changing working environment, so we have really close links with relevant employers and industries. They tell us what’s going on, so we can design courses that give you the skills they’re looking for. In the Faculty of Advanced Technology, for example, we specifically designed our computer security and forensics courses as a response to the growth in cyber crime. In other faculties, industry links also mean regular guest speakers and networking opportunities – another great boost for employability. At the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries, we have links with big-name media and technology players, like Apple UK, BBC Wales, Sony and Hewlett Packard, while our Law School has links with more than 40 law firms and agencies.

Get accredited

Lots of our courses have 'official’ industry approval, through accreditation from a host of professional bodies, from the British Computer Society (BCS) to the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) to the British Psychology Society (BPS).

First class facilities

Massive investment in facilities also means that you’ll be using the technology and equipment that professionals use in the real world, from flight simulators to TV studios to crime scene houses and healthcare suites.

Skills for the workplace, skills for life

When you get to work, you’ll be working as a team, writing notes or reports, giving presentations and communicating with colleagues, meeting targets or client deadlines. So we make sure you develop all these skills while you’re studying. Through group work, presentations, research and projects, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to practice the skills you need for any job in any sector.

Glam Edge

Glam Edge, the employability programme for the University of Glamorgan, brings all of these aspects together so that all students will gain more than just academic qualifications and have the right skills that employers need.
